Nationally Recognized Gerontological Consultants Dr. Chris and Roxann Johnson of Aging Consultants, Inc. are our Gerontological consultants. They designed the Oakwood Village Special Care Neighborhood and trained the staff. The have been nationally and internationally recognized for their innovative model that explains Alzheimer's and dementia as a "trip back in time." The "trip back in time" concept recognizes the journey of memory loss and educates the staff on how to affirm the resident by joining then on their trip back in time. We believe so strongly in family involvement and educating that our Gerontological consultants conduct family education sessions on a quarterly basis. Person Centered Care Our mission at the Oakwood Village Special Care Neighborhood is to nurture the spirit, protect dignity, and promote freedom of choice and encourage independence while striving to improve the quality of life for our residents. One way we achieve our mission is with "person centered care" which focuses on the person rather than the task. With our Special Care Neighborhood having a maximum capacity of 18 residents, each resident is assured special attention and individualized care. Competent and Compassionate Staff Our staff has been selected for qualities such as patience, understanding, and a willingness to learn. Every staff member has received extensive "dementia" specific training and understands the journey residents and families are traveling. We strive to be as much a support and resource to the family as we are to the resident. Therapeutic Activity Program We provide a therapeutic activity program 7 days a week. All activities are designed to maximize and maintain the capabilities of each resident. The activities are tailored to one's past history and life-style and emphasize "normal daily life events," in order to set the residents up for successful, positive experiences. Baking cookies, bread, or making butter, as well as gardening and bird watching are typical activities enjoyed by our residents. With the therapeutic activities, music, quiet voices, and gentle caring hands, the anxiety, frustrations and fears frequently experienced by those with Alzheimer's/Dementia are calmed. Therefore, we do not believe in using physical or chemical restraints. The Environmental Design With a sensitive blend of beauty and practicality, the design of the Oakwood Village Special Care Neighborhood incorporates the latest research and techniques in Alzheimer's/dementia care within a warm and home-like environment. From the secure entry door and outdoor patio/garden area to the soothing colors and specially designed features, the resident's safety, physical and psychological needs are our primary concern.
